Botanical expeditions (often called "Plant hunting") are scientific voyages designed to explore the flora of a particular region, with an aim to identify ecological and botanical adaptations. New plant species are still being discovered and it is important to document and understand these new plants and how they are adapting to our ever changing environment.
What is a plant cultivar?
A new plant cultivar is a human‑selected plant—essentially a chosen individual or line—that shows a distinct, desirable trait and can reliably retain that trait when propagated. In horticultural terms, a cultivar must be distinct, uniform, and stable, meaning it looks recognisably different from other plants of the same species, behaves consistently, and stays true to type when reproduced by the correct method.
A cultivar is identified directly in the plant’s name by a very specific formatting rule set out in the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP).
The cultivar epithet is:
Placed after the genus (and species, if used)
Written in single quotation marks
Written in a non‑Latin word or phrase (for names established after 1 Jan 1959)
Capitalised (each word begins with a capital letter unless linguistic custom dictates otherwise)

Thalictrum minus ‘Rootie Doots’
A distinctive new cultivar selected and named by National Collection holder Nicholas Guntrip‑Hook, Thalictrum minus ‘Rootie Doots’ represents a striking foliage and stem colour variant within the T. minus complex. Propagated vegetatively by division from a unique individual within the species, this cultivar is immediately recognisable for its deep purple stems, which contrast dramatically with the plant’s fine, blue‑green foliage.
Origin & Naming
‘Rootie Doots’ was discovered within cultivated material of Thalictrum minus and selected for its unusually intense stem pigmentation. The cultivar is named in honour of Nicholas’s wife, Ruth Guntrip‑Hook, whose nickname “Rootie Doots” lends the plant both its charm and its commemorative significance. The name follows ICNCP rules for cultivar epithets and is formally presented in single quotation marks.
Habit & Stems
A clump‑forming herbaceous perennial, typically reaching 60–100 cm depending on site conditions.
Stems are the defining feature: rich purple, often darkening further in strong light, and providing a bold architectural accent even before flowering. This pigmentation is markedly stronger than in typical T. minus, where stems are usually green or lightly flushed.
Foliage
Leaves are finely divided, blue‑green, and delicately textured, consistent with the species. The cool foliage tones amplify the visual impact of the purple stems, giving the plant a refined, bicolour structural presence.
Flowers
Airy clusters of soft yellow flowers appear in early to midsummer, typical of T. minus. The inflorescences float above the foliage on the coloured stems, creating a subtle but elegant contrast.
Propagation & Stability
‘Rootie Doots’ is maintained exclusively by division, ensuring the stability of its distinctive stem colour. Seed does not come true and should not be used for propagation. Clumps divide cleanly in early spring and establish readily.
Cultivation
Thrives in moist, well‑drained soil in full sun or light shade.
Performs well in mixed borders, naturalistic plantings, and settings where its stem colour can be appreciated at close range.
The plant is naturally upright and self‑supporting, with no staking required under normal conditions.
Aesthetic & Horticultural Merit
Strong purple stems provide a rare and valuable colour trait within Thalictrum minus.
Excellent for adding vertical accents and fine texture.
Combines beautifully with silver foliage, grasses, and pale‑flowered perennials.

Thalictrum minus subsp. guntriphookii syn. 'Wray Castle'
The world of horticulture is often filled with surprises, and nature has a way of revealing its hidden wonders when least expected. As the UK battles to save its dwindling wildlife and ecosystems, a remarkable discovery of a previously unknown plant species around Wray Bay, Lake Windermere, gives hope that the tides have turned and that the natural world is recovering.
A plant was fortuitously stumbled upon during an impromptu botanical exploration conducted by Nicholas Guntrip-Hook on 24th August 2023, in the Lake District National Park. An intriguing, potentially new, plant species belonging to the genus Thalictrum, of which Nicholas is the National Collection holder.
This remarkable discovery not only adds to the rich biodiversity of the region but also offers captivating insight into the area's natural resilience. As the investigation into confirmation of this species continues, read the introductory report below:

UNITED KINGDOM. England, Cumbria: Lake District National Park, Windermere, Wray Castle shoreline, growing in open, lightly shaded lakeside humus over glacial till; 54.404°N, 2.963°W; elev. 45 m; collected 12 June 2024 by N. Thalictrum minus subsp. guntriphookii differs from T. minus subsp. minus in its consistently smaller leaflets, which are rounded to broadly obovate, typically 5–9 mm long, with seven shallow, regular serrations on the distal margin (vs. larger, more variable leaflets, 10–20 mm long, with irregular lobing or crenation in subsp. minus).
Foliage in subsp. guntriphookii is blue‑green to grey‑green, matte, and finely textured, giving a markedly delicate appearance (vs. green to yellow‑green, often glossier in subsp. minus). Plants of subsp. guntriphookii are consistently shorter, 40–70 cm tall, forming compact, neat clumps (vs. 60–120 cm, often more lax).
Inflorescences are lighter, more open, with smaller yellowish flowers and slender glaucous stems (vs. denser panicles and more robust stems in subsp. minus). The Windermere taxon forms a stable, coherent wild population with uniform morphology, not observed in other British populations of T. minus.
Root system fibrous with short rhizome segments; clump‑forming, non‑running.
Named in honour of Nicholas Guntrip-Hook, National Collection holder of Thalictrum, who discovered and documented this distinct population at Wray Castle, Windermere.
Known only from the shores of Lake Windermere, Cumbria, England, where it grows in open lakeside turf, lightly shaded by scattered trees, on moist, well‑drained glacial soils. No other British populations with this morphology are known.
Thrives in moist, humus‑rich soils with periodic lake influence. Plants are naturally self‑supporting due to compact stature. Foliage remains attractive throughout the season. Comfortable with long term submersion during autumn / winter months.
Flowering June–July; fruiting July–August.
Currently known from a single natural population. Further surveys needed to determine extent and stability.
This taxon is morphologically coherent and geographically distinct from T. minus subsp. minus. The combination of very small leaflets, seven regular serrations, blue‑grey foliage, and compact habit is not reported in other European treatments of T. minus. Molecular data would be valuable to confirm its phylogenetic position, but the morphological evidence supports recognition at subspecies rank.
